Army in the shadows - Armée des
Ombres, L' (1969)
France, 1942, during the occupation. Philippe
Gerbier, a civil engineer, is one of the French Resistance's chiefs. Given away
by a traitor, he is interned in a camp. He manages to escape, and joins his
network at Marseilles, where he makes the traitor be executed... This
non-spectacular movie (do not expect any Rambo or Robin Hood) shows us
rigorously and austerely the everyday of the French Resistants : their solitude,
their fears, their relationships, the arrests, the forwarding of orders and
their carrying out... Both writer Joseph Kessel and co-writer and director
Jean-Pierre Melville belonged to this "Army in the Shadows". |

Abenteuer des Werner Holt, Die
(1965)
- The Adventures of Werner Holt A
Anti-war movie. More than remarkable film from East(!)-Germany. Regular German
soldiers loose their faith in the war and their commanders when they are
confronted with the criminal acts of the SS (their superiors). The key scene
plays at a saw mill, where SS troops cut of body parts of innocent civilians.
The Russians are nearing and Werner and his comrads think of surrendering.
Excellent playing and scenery, with clear personal viewpoints.

Au revoi, les enfants (1987) - Good Bye, Children
A French boarding school run by priests seems to
be a haven from World War II until a new student arrives. He becomes the
roommate of top student in his class. Rivals at first, the roommates form a bond
and share a secret.
During WWII, in a Catholic boarding school in
the French countryside, two boys become friends. One is a French boy, Julien
Quintin, and the other is a Jewish boy, Jean Bonnet, who is being hidden from
the Nazis by the friars who run the school. Louis Malle directed this film based
on what actually happened when he was at a boarding school himself during the
war. |

A
Bridge Too Far (1977)
An
historic telling of the failed attempt to capture several bridges to Germany in
World War II in a campaign called Operation Market-Garden. A failed attempt by
the allies in the latter stages of WWII to end the war quickly by securing three
bridges in Holland allowing access over the Rhine into Germany. A combination of
poor allied intelligence and the presence of two crack German panzer divisions
meant that the final part of this operation (the bridge in Arnhem over the Rhine)
was doomed to failure. |

Western Approaches
(1944)
A wartime documentary, made under the auspices
of the Crown Film Unit, made as a tribute to the Merchant Navy. During WWII they
kept the lifeline to America and the Commonwealth open so that this little
island could fight on. Even as late as 1943/4 when this was made the convoys
still provided vital essential supplies as well as the materiel necessary to
take the fight into Europe. This film dramatises the experiences of many
merchant seamen. |
